My dear Dr. Mordtmann.
In view of the present situation which brings my work to an end I have decided to take advantage of the opportunity given to leave the country and to take a vacation. My wife needs this change even more than I do. She has been most devotedly attached to her work in the hospitals and in devising work for the poor. I am distressed in view of the misery which may come to the poor people in the interior and I am doing what I can to keep the stream of help which we have supplied thus far from dying out altogether.
I cannot leave without sending a word of thankfulness for your never-failing kindness to me in these matters.
I have also most grateful recollections of the Embassy's courtesy in their share of the work.
It will always afford me pleasure to testify of this.
1) in seiner Abwesenheit von hier wird Nr. Luther Fowle die Geschäfte der relief work übernehmen; Mr. Gates vom Robert Collège übernimmt die Leitung des Bible House;
2) um die Amerikanischen Gelder hierher zu leiten, hat Mr. Peet sich an seine Holländischen Freund (Gf. Bylandt) und an den hiesigen Schwedischen Gesandten gewandt;
3) die Sache der Vertretung von Mr. Jackson (Amerikanischer Konsul in Aleppo) ist noch nicht geregelt; man hat Mr. Pocke, Österr. Staatsangehöriger in Aleppo aus einer alten Holländischen Familie, der früher einmal das Amerikanische Konlsulat verwaltet hat, vorgeschlagen, evtll. den Spanischen Konsul.
