1921-05-30-DE-001     From Walter Roessler to German Foreign Office [en de]
According to Roessler, if he had to testify in the proceedings against the murderer of Talaat Pasha then he would have to depict him as one of the Turkish statesmen “who wanted the Armenians to be annihilated and carried this out according to plan”. He would also have to quote the Commissioner of Deportations in Aleppo, who said to him, “You do not understand what we want: we want an Armenia without Armenians.”

Permission for Rössler to testify could only be given if the former consul were to speak only about “pure facts”. This, however, would make his testimony of little interest, because these facts were known. The remark concerning an “Armenia without Armenians” was of little value, because it came from a subordinate Turkish official.
