Garabed's
father during the persecution of the Armenians in Urfa had taken refuge in the
house of a foreigner, and so was saved from the general massacre of the men.
His wife and three little children were imprisoned in a big building, where
thousands of Armenians were held captives for some time before they were sent
away, and where many of them died from starvation and disease. His two little
girls succumbed. Finally his wife succeeded in fleeing to the house where he
was hidden, thinking that she could manage to get hold of the little boy,
Garabed later. Her efforts however were in vain. Later she was informed by
other women that he was dead. This however was not the case. He must have gone
off with a caravan and have been taken in by an Arab. There his father, who is
now a peasant in one of our colonies, discovered him and recognised him on
certain spots on his body. The Arab being handsomely rewarded gave up this boy,
who is now living with his parents in the village.
He is very happy and simply
adores his father.
Left our care: December 1, 1927. Relatives, father.
