During the war the Turkish
Government deported her father and brothers to the region of Mossul. News came
that they have been massacred in the Mesopotamien plain. Vartouhi was deported
with her mother, her older sister and many other Armenian women and children to
Ras-el-Ain. After a few days stay they were driven further on into the Syrian
desert. On the way a Turk from Sivas, named Osman Nuri, took her from her
relatives and after four years capture married her by force. The former wives
of the Turk were very jealous and illtreated her daily. Lately her husband was
transferred to Nissibin. On their way they were very close to the Syrian
frontier, Vartouhi took his chance and fled and reached safely a Syrian village
near Hassitshe. Our agent was informed, he came immediately and sent her by
motor-car to Aleppo.
