His father was a soldier in the
Turkish Army and was sent to Erzeroum to fight against the Russians but he
never returned. Manug, with his mother and one brother (No. 1177) were exiled
to Urfa. On the road, upon the banks of
the Euphrates his mother died and her dead body was thrown into the river. When the caravan was passing near
the village Sutchan at night, Manug and his brother profiting by the
opportunity, hid themselves in a pit while the rest were forced forwards in
great hurry. The following day a Kurd met them on the road and took both to the
chief of the village, where they had to work eleven years for their master,
named Sherif Bey. At last, disgusted with the hard and ill-compensed life, both
of them fled to Arab Pounar whence were sent to us.
