In the beginning of the deportation, Mariam's father
disappeared, probably killed. She was exiled with her mother and
country-people. They were driven towards Rakka. Her mother, who was exhausted,
could not walk fast enough and was beaten by a gendarm. She fainted and he
threw her on the road side. Mariam was forced to walk further on. How terrible
for her to leave her poor mother in that condition, we understand. The same day
she was taken by a Beduin. After two years of slavery she fled to her
native-town Narched near Urfa. One day a Kurd carried off with her to his
village and married her. Ten years she was forced to live with him, then our
agent in Arab-pounar succeeded in rescuing her and sending her to us. How happy
Mariam is now, she fells that she is in a safe harbour.
Left our care: July 13,
