He was deported with his family to Der-el-Zor, where his parents and sisters were killed. He and his three brothers were sent further on to a town named Khaboor. There the caravan was attacked by nomadic tribes and almost all of them were killed. Vartan had some money and gave it to an Arab who took him to his tent as a prisoner.
In the meanntime he met the servant of his neighbour who also was an Armenian. They recognized each other as Armenians and soon the boy told her about his intention of marrying her. Vartan asked his master for the permission but he refused. Vartan informed the girl and both fled to Der-el-Zor and from there they were sent through our agent to this city.
Found work and settled down with his wife here in Aleppo.
