Garabed's
father was taken to the Turkish army. His mother, a younger brother, a sister
and he himself were deported to Deir-el-Zor.
They passed the river, and on
the other side they were attacked by Arabs, who selected several children from
the caravan and took them to their tents. The remaining parts of the caravan
were unclothed and thrown into the river. So happened to Garabed's mother and
sister, who was but a little baby.
Garabed was taken to one tribe
and his brother Koorken to another one. Some days after his brother was killed
by Arab boys, and one day also Garabed was surrounded by Circassian boys, who
began to stone him till he fell down as a dead and remained there 3 days
without any food
An Arab found him and brought
him to his tent where he soon recovered. He stayed 10 years with the Arab and
worked as a shepherd and servant.
Garabed grew up and wanted
very much to learn a trade and return to his own nation. He asked his master,
and he being a good man permitted Garabed who went to Hassitshe. From there our
agent sent him to us.
