After her father was taken into the
Turkish army. She was deported with her mother, three brothers and one sister
to Urfa. After some weeks the caravan went on and reached Deir-el-Zor. There
she was taken by an Arab, who gave her to a Gypsy in exchange for a sheep. The
Gypsy married her, thus Mariam began to live by theft, fortune telling etc.
One day her aunt, in Aleppo, was
informed about the arrival of a group of Gypsies at Aleppo in great tumult and
she heard that Mariam was among them. The information was true. She came
immediately to us asking our assistance. We took the girl away by paying some
money to one of the Gypsies who brought her near the Anna car, and so she could
flee more easily and safely.
