Mariam's father was killed
during the deportation. She, her mother, five brothers and two sisters were
deported to Diarbekir. Near that town the caravan was attacked by Kurds, who
killed most of the people, the rest were wounded, women and girls were taken to
the Turkish or Kurdish houses as servants or slaves. She herself was taken by a
Kurd to his house and lived there several years. When Mariam grew up, the Kurd
married her. During the last rebellion of the Kurds her husband was put in
prison by Kemalists. Mariam profited from the occasion and fled to Mardin, then
to Hassitshe from where by our agent she was sent to us.
