In the beginning of the war his father was taken to the Turkish army. His mother was ill and died before the Armenian massacre. Matios was deported with his brothers and sisters to the villages near Urfa.

            Matios looked for water, he was very thirsty, a Kourd saw him and took him to his village and kept him there. In this way he was separated from his brothers and sisters.

            After doing eight years hard farming work he fled to Urfa and from there to Aleppo.

            His eyes were in a very bad condition an[d] total blindness seemed unavoidable. However after having nursed them for half a year and more, they are now beyond danger. He was not able to learn a trade, but he has found other work and is supporting himself.
