Mekhri was deported with his mother
and two sisters. His father was a soldier in the Turkish army. On the road, the
families decimated, hunted and pursued were soon dispersed. His two sisters
were sold by gendarms into slavery. His mother had been half carried and half
dragged away by the Kurds, though she kept scratching vigorously in
self-defense. As to Mekhri deprived of all his dear ones, when he was awaiting
his doom, an Arab passing by pitied the poor creature brought him to his house
and took care of him for eleven years. All this time Mekhri remained as a
simple shepherd. It happened, however, that his father once gained information
about his son and hastened to us asking for assistance. We did our best, and
the boy was saved.
