The Turks deported the mother with her four children
after they had killed the father. The caravan of deportation was conducted over
Malatia to Diarbekir, from there to Urfa and finally into the plain Surudj.
Garabed's little sister could not resist well the fatigue. Therefore her mother
gave her to a Turk in Malatia in order to safe her life. The mother was not
strong either, hunger and fatigue caused her early death. Near Surudj a Kurd
bought Garabed and his brother from a Turkish gendarm and took both to his
village. His brother was sold to a village in the neighbourhood. Garabed lived
until now in the Kurdish village. He was a shepherd there and rather
well-treated. Armenians who did pass the village persuaded him that he would do
better to join his nation. When he heard about our work and the possibilities
awaiting him, he fled and crossed the frontier. Our agent met him and sent him
by motor-car to Aleppo.
