Manuel told us that during the deportation he was exiled
with his parents and one brother to Aleppo and then to Ras-el-Ain. There he had
witnessed his father's and brother's homicide.
From Ras-el-Ain the caravan was sent
further on to Mardin, on the road his mother was separated from him and by the
gendarms she was sold to an Arab only for five Medjidies. Manuel reached with
the caravan to the village Bektashi near Mardin, where he had to work 12 years
for his Kürd master. It is difficult for us to describe the hard and endurable
life which he had passed during those 12 years, we say only that he was ill-treated.
One day, disgusted with the life, he
fled and reached Mardin, where fortunately he met an Armenian priest who sent
him to us.
