When
the order of deportation came, she was exiled with her family consisting of
eleven members. After a troublesome and dangerous journey the caravan reached
the banks of Euphrates. Men, women and children were obliged to cross the river
in hurry by the force of the gendarms' bayonet. There was the most horrible
scene which has been offered to the view of heaven. A large portion of them
were drowned in the river. Many more were killed on the spot, others were
beaten down by the hordes' hoofs. The remainder, who were able to cross the
river, arriving at the opposite bank found a band of plunderers awaiting their
arrival. In short, the miseries which she suffered were indescribable, she was
the only survivor of her family. At length our agent at Membidj succeeded to
save the unfortunate woman, who was lately in the possession of a Turkish
barber.
