After killing her father, the Turks deported Garabed with
his mother and many other Armenians. After wandering weeks and months long in
the wildest countries they came to the district of Mardin. Kerbe Ballik is a
small village, laying in a valley. There the caravan was attacked. Turks,
Kurds, and Circassian seconded by Turkish soldiers, massacred most of these
unhappy people after robbing everything from them. Garabed says: "One
could only see sabres, daggers, knives, and blood." When they wanted to murder his mother they
took Garabed from her and [??? See photo]ng him away. A Kurd named Osman took
him to his house. He became his shepherd. In his early days he had to work
rather hard. Of course he was never paid for the work. Not even sufficient food
was his reward. He was regarded and always called "Christian dog".
Two years ago he tried to flee but he was caught and punished very seriously.
However, Garabed did not want to stay among the Kurds. He planned for his next
escape. A few weeks ago, his master went on business to Mardin. Garabet did
profit of this opportunity and fled over the frontier. He met our agent who
sent him by automobile to our
Rescue-home in Aleppo.
