The boy whose history we are
relating is one of those poor creatures, who suffered much. He was exiled with
his parents and two sisters. When the caravan reached on the banks of Khabur
there was work of extermination. Nearly four hundred men and women were killed
in less than an hour and the dead bodies were thrown into the river. Among the
victims were his parents and two sisters too. In this way the family of a known
merchant was broken from foundation to roof. Hagop as the only survivor of the
family was taken to an Arab's tent and he grew up as an Arab. He lived eleven
years with his masters in the village Harmendat near Tel-Ermen and in those
eleven years all that can happen to him has happened. One day an Armenian
peddler passing by the village beckoned to him to follow him, which he did, and
reached Hassitshe from where he was sent to us.
