On looking attentively one can see
that Siranoush's eyes have not been tearless for a longtime. She was exiled
with her parents, whom she hardly remembers. The Arab, who took her out of the
caravan near Belich, fed her little better than a dog. In spite of all the
suffering which she had undergone, she was obliged to live there, because she
could not flee, being always watched closely. After a period of hard work she
was married to an Arab as a second wife. The first wife of her husband was very
unkind to Siranoush. She had the habit of dispensing each day a certain amount
of insults and blows, which Siranoush received patiently. At length, disgusted
with the life, she fled and got into the open country, where, as she walked
along, met with some French soldiers, who pitied and brought her to our agent.
She was sent per auto to us.
