During the exile Khatun was sent
with her parents to Deir-el-Zor. On the road near Mardin, in the pass of the
mountains up which the caravan was forced to march, the Kurds attacked them.
In
the great uproar and confusion she lost her parents, and came into the
possession of an Arab. The Arab took her to his tent near Mardin, where the
poor girl tasted all kinds of suffering. She thought several times to take her
chance to flee, but the conditions which she impased prevented her. One day,
however, she was informed that her possessor intended to marry her. She fled to
an Armenian Catholic Priest, who hid her for some days in his house, then in
due time he sent her to us.
