When in 1915 the first caravan of deportation composed of
mostly half nacked women and children came to Urfa, the Armenians of this town
decided to defend themselves to the utmost possible against the Turks. In spite
of the Turkish forces composed of regular troops, seconded by artillery, the
Armenians could resist during three weeks. Unfortunately they were forced to
surrender by lack of food and ammunition. Mihran's parents were killed during
the resistance. He himself was taken prisoner when the Turks occupied the
Armenian quarter. He was sold by solders to a rich Turk named Tahsildar Bakir
Effendi. Mihran became a stable-man, he also had to work hard in his master's
vineyard. His master a fanatic Turk was never satisfied with his work, he was
illtreating him, calling him a "Giaour". There were no Armenians left
to whom he could flee. Indeed after the Armistice some did return to their city
but soon afterwards they have been deported once more and sent into Syrian
territory. But Mihran wanted to become free again, he left the Turk's house by
night. Wandering from village to village he reached the Syrian frontier. In
Djerablus he met an Armenian who showed him the way to our Rescue-home.
