On the first outbreak of the
deportation her father was killed and the rest of the family was exiled to Islahie.
She herself, was taken by a gypsy. Her daily task was to feed the camels.
Khanum's relatives in Aleppo had asked our aid to find this girl, but we could
find no trace of her in anyway. One day, our agent in Arabpounar saw a girl
with the gypsies, who had come there to pass the summertime. Our agent, looking
attentively recognized the girl, because he himself was a countryman of hers.
It was not a difficult task to persuade Khanum and to send her to Aleppo. The
following her arrival we witnessed in our office the most solemn and moving
scene in the world, sister and brother, gazing steadily each into the other's
face, tears in their eyes and joy in their hearts!
We took the customary
signature of her brother and gave his sister to him.
