When the deportation started his father was killed in his native town and the rest of the family deported till Urfa. His mother died there.
Avedis was taken to a Turkish family and became their servant. After two years he returned to Shiro where he lived five years as a farmer and as a Moslem boy. He met a Greek gentleman who told him that there were many Armenians in Aleppo and besides that Armenian orphanages. When Avedis heard that he fled to Malatia. There he met Armenians who were going to Aleppo. He asked them to take him with them, they agreed and so he could reach this city after a long, painful and perilous journey.
Avedis came into connection with his relatives and went to live with friends in Beirut.
