Avedis'
father died before the war. He was exiled with his mother, brother and a sister
in the direction of Deir-el-Zor. Then further on to Hassitshe. There Tchetchens
attacked the caravan and a dreadful slaughter took place. Avedis tells us that
the blood was running as a red stream. Avedis was clinging to his mother till a
Tchetchen came killed her and dragged away with Avedis and his brother. What
became of his sister he does not know. Twelve years the poor boys had to work
hard for the murderer of their mother. Once they tried to flee, but were caught
and punished in that way that they never dared trying it again. Once when they
were guarding their sheep near the road a motor-car passed. As the Armenian
chauffeur understood that the boys were Armenians, he brought them to
Hassitshe. The elder brother wanted to stay there, but Avedis was sent further
on to our rescue-home in Aleppo.
