Zekie was deported with her parents.
Near Sindjar they were attacked by Arabs. During the attack she lost her
parents. An Arab took her and kept three months in his house, then he sold her
to the chief of the village. An Armenian Catholic priest, named Pere Joseph
visiting the same village, saw Zekie and inquiring into her past story he
ascertained that she was an Armenian girl. Accordingly he demanded her from her
possessor. The chiefman was a noble one, he did not refuse his request but it
was very difficult to persuade Zekie to leave the Arab's house, because she was
completely ignorant of her parents, besides, she was not ill-treated there. The
priest returned to Aleppo, found Zekie's mother (a former freed woman by us No.
0515) and sent her to the sheikh to beg her child. She did so, the man returned
the child back to her mother. Her mother was unable to care of her, therefore
she was sent to us. We found her uncle in Aleppo. She went to live with him.
