His father, in his native country,
was separated from his family. There is no further news about him. Varteres was
exiled with his mother and one sister to Hamidie, where the Turks killed his
mother. The Kurds took him with his sister to the village Galo there his sister
fell ill and died. Varteres lived eleven years with the Kurds working as a
shepherd for his master. During the spring season the tribe came near
Tel-Samen. An Armenian saw the boy and informed the chief of our colony about
him. The chief sent for Varteres' master and persuaded him to return his slave
to his own nation. Thus, Varteres was sent to us.
His two uncles are supposed to be in America.
