The deportation order came from Constantinople and within a few hours most of the Armenians from Adiaman were deported to Urfa. Garabed was deported with his mother and little brother to this town. His mother succeeded in placing him in the American orphanage. She was sent on to Aleppo.

During the insurrection of Urfa, Turks occupied the orphanage, collected the boys, exiled them to Mardin. A policeman of this town took him to his house where Garabed lived one year as his servant. Afterwards the policeman gave him as a present to another Turk and there Garabed became a carriage driver. Once he came to Aleppo in business. He looked everywhere for his mother but could not find her and returned to his master, living six years with him. Once more he came with his master to this city. This time he saw Aleppo differently. He saw many Armenians in the town, he talked with them and heard from them about orphanages and our reception house. He decided to flee knowing that if he could not find his mother he could at least come back to his nation and religion. He left his master and came to us on June 8.

His brothers are in America.

Went to live with his aunt in Beirut.
