PICTURE

Husband of No: 608, Eugenie Khetemian.

Gulbeng's father died before the war. He himself with his family was deported to Aleppo. After a walk of several months they reached Aleppo. His mother, one sister and one brother died on the road. They were not allowed to make them a grave not even to be near them in their last moments. They were simply driven forward.

From Aleppo they were sent on to Der-el-Zor the great deportation centre of Armenians. On the road his elder sister was married by force to an Arab. His young sister was lost on the road.

Gulbeng came all alone to Der-el-Zor and was then put in another caravan destined to be massacred in the desert. Going to face the terrible moment, an Arab took him away from the caravan and engaged him as his servant. Gulbeng was working hard. The Arab liked him and especially his working power. After some years of service the Arab gave him a camel and some money. Gulbeng went to another tribe. There he met Eugenie (No. 0608) who was going to be married to an Arab. Gulbeng protested against and asked the chief of the tribe to permit him to marry the girl in question.

The chief accepted his camel and six Turkish gold pounds as the counter-value of Eugenie and in this way they were married together. A few years later Gulbeng fled with his wife to Der-el-Zor. Surmounting many dangers he succeeded in entering our agent's house in Der-el-Zor.

Our agent engaged a motor-car and sent both of them to us.
