Khoren's mother died before the war. After his father's death, his sisters were taken to different Turkish houses. Khoren with his two brothers and his aunt was deported to Permos. A Kurd of this town took him to his houses but the rest of the family was sent further. Khoren could never get any news from his relatives. He lived eight years with the Turk being his farmer.
When Armenians were leaving Turkey they passed their village and Khoren was charged to sell milk to them. Once one of the emigrants recognized Khoren and advised him to follow him to Aleppo, persuading him that he would be received in an orphanage. Khoren agreed and joined the leaving caravan, his master followed him but he could not find him among the large caravan.
