Garabed's
mother died in her native town. He himself was deported with his father and two
brothers to the region of Aleppo. His two brothers died after short sufferings
in this town. Garabed fled with his father to Beirut, but on their way they
were caught and brought back to Aleppo.
Both
were sent to a deportation camp and soon after their arrival his father became
ill and died of Typhus. An Arab from the Shammar tribe took Garabed to his
tent. He became the shepherd of his camels earning a small camel each year.
Garabed was rather well treated by the Arab but he desired to return to his
nation. There was another Armenian boy in the neighbourhood. He went to meet
him and told him about his desire to escape. He persuaded him to come with him
and so they one day arrived in our rescue-home.
Garabed went to live with his
brother in Beirut.
