After his father has been killed by the Turks, he was deported with his mother to a town named Ras-el-Ain. Near this town the caravan of deported Armenians was attacked by Kourds and Arabs. Most of these poor people were killed and robbed. His mother, however, succeeded in fleeing with him. They came to Mardin, but his mother died two months afterwards.

Djerdjis was taken to a Turkish family who kept him two years and put him afterwards out-doors. A Kourd from Zimmar took him as servant, but being ill-treated he fled again to Mardin. An Assyrian from there employed him as office-boy. After five years of service he was told that there are Armenian orphanages in Aleppo. Djerdjis went to our agent who sent him to us, having no relatives.
