During the Armenian deportation her family was in Deurt-Yol. However, the Armenians were collected by the Turkish government and sent walking to Der-el-Zor. Many of these poor people perished in the deserts. Mariam's family reached Der-el-Zor. Arriving there Mariam was taken to the Turkish orphanage. Her family like thousand others were massacred between Der-el-Zor and Hassitshe.
Mariam lost her relatives in that massacre. A Turkish gendarm from Bagdad took her from the orphanage and adopted her as his daughter. They went together to Bagdad. After six years the gendarm married her by force. Mariam wanted to flee but she could not, having no money on hand. She met once an Armenian in Bagdad and she asked him if he could help her to flee. The gentlemen told her to come in the morning and he waited for her on the corner of the street. Mariam came in due time and he took her to the Armenian church.
The Armenian priest kept her 3 weeks and sent her later to us.
