Relatives - sister in Beirut

His father died one year before the war. During the deportation the Armenian inhabitants of the town tried to defend themselves, but they were obliged to give way and in this way all came on the road. He was with his mother, one brother and four sisters. They passed near Biredjik and reached Diarbekir and then Mardin.

One of his sisters died on the road, another one was sold by a gendarme to a Turk. Near Nisibin the Kürds took his brother away and in the village Kheraberash he, himself was taken to the house of a Kürd, named Ibrahim Yousouf. There he had to pass 12 long and troublesome years.

During the last years he had always heard about Armenian boys fleeing from Arabs and Kürds, so, he too, decided to escape and one day, leaving the sheep upon the heels, he made his way to Mosoul, from where he was sent to us.

Hovhannes’ sister was found in Beyrouth, and we sent him there.
