A few days before the deportation his father had gone on business to Adana and never returned. Probably he was killed on the road.

Mardiros was exiled with his mother. After a walk of three hours the caravan was attacked by Kourds. Most of the deported people were killed. The rest wounded, women and girls were taken to Turkish and Kourdish houses. Some of them as servants, some as workers, others were put in harems. Mardiros’  mother was taken to a village named Kel-Khassa, where she became a servant. Mardiros [went] to a Turkish family in Aldoom and remained three years there. Later his mother located him and took him to her village. Mother and son lived four years together in Kel-Khassa. After the Armistice his mother became ill and died. The Armenian emigration had started, Mardiros fled from the Turkish family, joined a part of emigrants and came with them to Aleppo. - He was not able to support himself and so we took him in.
