Garabed
tells us that he was exiled with his parents, a brother and a sister to
Deir-el-Zor. After having stayed there some days the people were driven forward
to Shaddadie along the river Khabour. The road was full of corpse, old and new.
At midnight the slaughter began, and the most exciting scene followed. Men were
killed, women wounded, girls carried off by force, children beaten down by the
horses’ hoofs. The blood was running as a red stream. Garabeds’ parents,
brother and sister were killed, he hid himself under the dead bodies. After
some hours lots of women came undress the cropse for using or selling the
clothes. A woman found Garabed and brought him home to her tent. There he
stayed as a slave 12 year. Some muleteers found him and brought him to us.
