In the beginning of the deportation his father was put in prison and killed a few days later. The whole family was deported to Mardin. In Diarbekir a Turk took Garabed to his house and employed him as a servant. His relatives were sent further on and Garabed knows nothing about them.
Garabed was working nine years in the Turk's house without payment. Besides that he was ill-treated. Garabed remembered that he is an Armenian and he decided to flee. He went to Mardin there he asked the Armenian priest to help him. The Armenian priest recognized him as an Armenian and kept him for some time in his house. Later he was sent to our Hassitshe agent who sent him by motor-car to this city.
