During the persecution of the Armenians in the beginning
of the war all the inhabitants of Tel Ermen were driven into the church and
murdered. Aziz hid himself under the corpses and afterwards fled with his
sister and some boys. They reached a cave where they rested some days, then the
poor little ones ventured to flee by night and by day they found a hiding
place. They suffered from hunger, their food was but grass and leaves.
One day they were discovered
and brought to Ras-el-Ain. An Arab took possession of Aziz and he guarded his
sheep and camels many years. One day he heard that his sister was married to a
Kurd in a neighbouring village. He fled to there but the Kurd would not take him
in. He then went to Mardin from where by our helper he was sent to our
reception-home in Aleppo.
