In the beginning of the Armenian massacres his father fled to a village Khamil. There he had some Kourdish friends who brought his family there too. Later the Turkish government heard about it. Soldiers surrounded the village and his father was caught.

Arakel remained one month with his stepmother in this village. Some day a Turk passed there, he saw Arakel and asked him to come with him to Paloo. Arakel went and became his servant. For eight years he was living in Paloo.

When Armenians went to Aleppo he fled from his Turkish master and looked for a chance to go to Aleppo. He wanted to learn a trade. He met a muleteer who was going to Aleppo. Arakel offered him his aid on the road. The muleteer was glad to have a helper and took him with him.

As far as we know he has no relatives.

He was weak for a long time but at last he learned a trade and was able to support himself.
