Six months before the Great war, Vartanoush was married
to an Armenian young man in Erzinjian. Her parents and one sister who were
living in Constantinople came to visit her. Then the war broke out.
Vartanoush's husband was taken as a soldier and her parents and sister who
could not get away were deported with her in the direction of Adiaman. On the
road her parents were killed. Vartanoush and her sister reached Adiaman, where
Turks took possession of them. After three years her sister died and poor
Vartanoush was alone there in the hands of a bad Turk, who illtreated her. She
gave birth to a son, who died soon after. After 13 years she succeeded in
getting away with some muleteers and those brought her to our home.
Vartanoush
was sick for a long time, was treated for syphilis.
In the spring 1930 she went
to Muslemi and was mother in a French orphanage.
Left our care: September 1,
1931. Relatives in Constantinople. She went there to join those.
