Krikor's father died when he was a little boy. When the war broke out in Turkey his sister was placed in an Armerican orphanage. Soon Armenians were massacred or deported to far distances away from their homes and property. Kirkor with his mother were exiled to Sabka a town between Aleppo and Der-el-Zor. His mother an elderly woman could not support all the sufferings inflicted upon the caravan of thousands of helpless women and so she became ill on the road and died the day after her arrival at Sabka. Krikor with the survivors of the caravan were sent further on to the Syrian desert.
On their way to the unknown place the caravan was attacked by Arabs and Turkish gendarms, robbed and most of them killed.
Krikor, however, could flee, he went to an Arab village and asked for admission as a servant. In this way he became the servant of an Arab chief who employed him as shepherd and he remained nine long years there.
His master was quite satisfied with him and wanted to marry him to an Arab girl in order to attach him more, but he refused and fled to Der-el-Zor where our agent sent him by motor car to our reception house.
