Hovhannes was exiled with his
parents from Aintab to Deir-el-Zor. There he lost his parents, his sister was
taken by an Arab, he himself came into the possession of a rich man, a chief of
the tribe Shammar. Six years before his sister was rescued by an Armenian
chauffeur and was living in Aleppo. She had made untold efforts to rescue her
brother, but all was in vain, because Hovhannes thought his sister to be dead.
One day she came to us asking our assistance. We sent her photograph to our
agent, who showed it to his brother. He remembered his sister's countenance and
in this way was persuaded to return to his sister and to his own nation.
