Shortly after the beginning of the Russian-Turkish war all Armenians were deported. Thousands and thousands were massacred, the survivors taken as slaves, women and girls taken by force to the Moslem Harems.

Novart, her mother and brother were deported together. In Kharzan a Turk took Nuvart to Diarbekir. The rest of the family was sent further on. Novart lived seven years in the Turkish family being a servant. She never got news from her family.

When Armenians started to emigrate, she asked her mistress to allow her to go back to her nation. The latter agreed. Novart sold some of her clothes made some cash money, paid a muleteer for her journey and came to Aleppo.
