Hovhannes reached our house recently
from our Hassitshe agent being clothed with worn, ragged and shabby clothes.
Inquiring into his past history we
ascertained that during the deportation his father was arrested and put in prison. He was exiled
with his mother, one sister and two brothers. In Mardin he was dragged away
from his family and brought to village Sarras (!). At their mournful moment of
separation his mother's heart swelled and she burst into tears but was of no
use.
In that village he had to work 12
years in the house of Molla Mahmoud, a brutal man, who treated the boy a little
better than a dog, even his Kürd neighbors pitied the poor boy and one of them
informed a Christian, the latter, in his turn informed the priest in Mardin and
soon Hovhannes' escape was arranged. Now
he is forgetting his previous sorrows in our home.
