Mariam's father died before the war.
When the deportation started she and her sister were taken into the Turks'
houses in their native town, while her mother was exiled in the direction of Deir-el-Zor.
Mariam heard nothing more about her mother. She lived six years with her
possessor always looking for a chance to flee. Once she took an opportunity and
fled, but when she was re-taken, the punishment had been savage and excessive.
She was the Turk's wife, but in fact, his slave. Nevertheless, Mariam was not
discouraged. After five years she made another attempt which enabled her to
reach Aleppo. We took her into our rescue-house because she was helpless.
