In the beginning of the Armenian massacres her father was killed in his native town by some Turkish soldiers. Anastas with her mother were deported to a village near Mardin. On the road a Turkish officer wanted to marry her mother, as she refused the officer killed her. Anastas went all alone to Mardin. She had no relatives who could take care of her.
An Arab saw her in the market, he needed a cheap servant and so took her to his house. Anastas lived nine years in the Arab family. Her master treated her well but her mistress was very much against her and beated her almost every day.
Anastas knew that she was an Armenian, she always was called "Giaour" she went to the Armenian priest who sent her to our Hassitshe agent, from there she came by motor-car to our Reception-house.
