In the beginning of the persecutions
his father was in a neighbouring village of Urfa. There he was killed in a
fight against the Turks, because the inhabitants of this village partly
defended themselves against their enemies. Megerditch was exiled with his
mother and one brother. One the road, near Rakka, his mother fell ill and died.
His brother was killed by a Tchetchen. He himself was taken by an Arab to his
tent, where he grew up as a shepherd and remained eleven years. He was very
anxious to find his relatives. One day he met with an Armenian chauffeur, who
judged him rightly to be an Armenian. The chauffeur persuaded Megerditch to
come with him to our agent in Ras-el-Ain, who sent him per auto to us.
