During the deportation the
whole family was exiled in the direction of Mardin. On the road the caravan was
attacked several times by hostile bands, who did not spare even the lives of
the innocent children. Among the survivors were Garabed and his mother. In the
vicinity of Urfa both of them were carried away and brought into a Tchetchen's
hut. The same night the poor woman was killed by the unpious Tchetchen, giving
up her life in defense of her honour. As to Garabed, he lived with this
dangerous man for many years, tasting occasionally severe punishments for his
obstinate attempts to escape. At length, Garabed succeeded to escape and reach
Djerablus. Our agent pitied him and sent him to us.
