He was deported with his family as
far as Mardin. When the caravan was passing near Karaman a Turk wanted to have
a boy. The gendarm gave Joseph to him for two Medjidies. Being separated from
the family he became the Turk's servant. Later his master installed himself in
Mardin. There he sold Joseph to a Kurd with whom he lived many years working as
a garcon in a coffee house. Once, an unknown man was sitting in one corner of
the coffee house, when the boy came near to him, the unknown man, in very slow
voice, proposed him to go with him to an orphanage in Aleppo, where he could
find his relatives. Joseph was very glad and accepted his proposal immediately.
The following day his master could
not find his slave, because he had reached the Syrian territory with the assistance
of our agent. He brought him to Hassitche, where he was sent to us.
