Garabed was exiled with his whole
family from Tel-Ermen to Mardin. Near Mardin, upon the mountains, the Kurds
attacked the caravan and killed the people. He witnessed his father's and
mother's death. He himself got a dagger-stroke on his rib, the mark of which is
still visible. As Garabed was stretched out upon the spot, another Kurd came and
took him to his village. He took care of him until he was cured. In this
village (Amoudie) he lived eleven years, serving as a shepherd for his master.
One day he passed with the herds the Turkish frontier and came into the Syrian
territory. There he met with an Armenian, who advised him to leave the Kurd's
house to rejoin his own nation. Garabed consented to the proposal and reached
Hassitshe, from where by our agent he was sent to us.
He
was very ill when he reached our rescue-home.
