Hovhannes was deported with his parents and brother to Aleppo. After a little rest in this town, the caravan was sent further on to the region of Der-el-Zor.
Between Aleppo and Meskene, the caravan of deported Armenians was attacked by Arabs. Hovhannes was taken to an Arab family and kept there nine years as shepherd. Hovhannes remembered well that he was an Armenian and looked only for a chance to return to his nation.
An Armenian fellow had passed by his village going to Aleppo. Hovhannes asked him to take him with him to Aleppo. The Armenian fellow agreed and both came walking during the night time to this city.
