Vartan's family composed of ten
members was exiled in the direction of Vartatil, but none of them reached there.
On the road they were dispersed and had lost each other. Varteres being
separated from the others was sent as far as Mardin where he remained eight
years in the village Golli and worked as a farmer. One day he went to Mardin to
sell some fruits. There he was informed about one of his brothers living in the
village Zunnar not far from the city. He went straight to that village and
joined his brother. Vartan once had gone to a neighbouring village on business
when his brother claimed for the recompense of his many years working. His
master got angry and killed the boy. When Vartan returned, the Turks cheated
him saying that his brother had gone to the Christians. But a Kurdish young man
pitied and informed him secretly that his brother was killed and now the same
fate was awaiting for him. Upon which Vartan ran away as fast as he could and
reached Mardin and by the help of a Catholic priest he was sent to Hassitshe,
whence by our agent to us.
